Meta's WhatsApp Business AI vs a paid AI sales assistant: when is it enough?

Last updated: 24 October 2026

Indian customers already shop on WhatsApp. A 2025 Kantar study cited by Meta found that 91% of online adults in India chat with a business every week. On 14 May 2026, Meta launched Business AI inside the WhatsApp Business app for Indian small businesses: an AI that replies to customers for you.

That raises a fair question for any shop, clinic or D2C brand: if Meta's AI comes with the app, why pay for an AI sales assistant? This guide sets out what Meta says its product does, what Meta hasn't documented, and the situations where a paid tool earns its cost.

What Meta's Business AI does

According to Meta's India announcement (14 May 2026, updated 26 May) and its Meta Business Agent product page:

  • Replies around the clock. It answers customer questions, recommends products, captures leads and books appointments inside the WhatsApp Business app.
  • Learns from what you give it. Meta's product page says it learns from your past WhatsApp chats and can use your website, catalogue, documents, photos, Facebook Page posts and price lists. You can rewrite its answers to change future replies.
  • Speaks Indian languages. Meta says it works in "all native Indian languages."
  • Takes no coding. You set it up from the Tools tab under "Your Business AI".
  • Leaves you in control. You choose who it talks to (everyone, only new customers, or customers from your ads), tell it when to hand a chat to you, take over any conversation, or turn it off.
  • UPI payments are coming. Meta says that "starting soon" Business AI will be able to take UPI payments inside the chat. It was not described as live at launch.

Two Indian businesses are quoted in the announcement. Tuba Siddiqui of Soil Concept said: "I just uploaded our product catalog and documents, and the AI learned the details and tone of my business." Gunveen Kaur of The Purple Sunset reports a 40% rise in sales. These are the businesses' own figures, published by Meta.

Who can use it: Meta says Indian small and medium businesses "must meet certain criteria to be eligible" and use the WhatsApp Business app. It does not publish the criteria. Its product page adds that "some Meta Business Agent features may not yet be available to all eligible businesses."

What it costs

Meta's announcement and product page do not state a price. TechCrunch reported on 3 June 2026 that Meta plans to charge by including the agent in "some tiers of its WhatsApp Business Premium subscription", with larger businesses paying by token use. Business Today reported the same split on 3 July 2026.

When Meta announced Meta Business Agent globally on 3 June 2026, it said "getting started is free" and that paid subscriptions would follow "in the coming months". Indian businesses joined a waitlist after the WhatsApp Business Summit in July 2026, so availability depends on your account. Open Tools → "Your Business AI" in the app to see what you have.

On the WhatsApp Business Platform (the API used by larger businesses and software tools), Meta's pricing page lists its agent at $2.00 per million tokens, "approximately 4–5 cents (USD) per message" for a typical message.

What Meta hasn't documented

None of the following means Meta's AI can't do it. It means Meta's announcement and product page, as of 24 October 2026, don't describe it. Check inside the app before you decide.

  • Handoff to named staff. Meta describes the AI handing chats "to you" and "escalating complex cases to human agents." It doesn't describe routing a chat to a particular salesperson, branch or shift.
  • Email. Meta lists WhatsApp, Messenger and ads, and TechCrunch reports Instagram DMs. Email isn't mentioned.
  • Follow-ups the AI starts. The described features answer customers who message first. Unprompted follow-ups and win-back messages aren't described.
  • Campaigns. Business AI is not described as a campaign tool.
  • Approvals. Meta's page says the AI can "respond to customer questions about discounts, payment and delivery." It doesn't describe the owner approving a specific discount or exception before the AI offers it.
  • A reviewable record of what the AI promised, beyond the chat itself.
  • Business-hours booking rules. Booking appointments is listed. TechCrunch reports that managing calendars is among the capabilities Meta is still working on.

When the free tool is enough

Meta's Business AI is a reasonable first step if most of these are true:

  • One person answers WhatsApp, usually the owner.
  • Questions are simple and repeat: timings, location, "is this available?", "do you deliver to Andheri?"
  • Volume is low enough that you can read every chat the AI handles.
  • Your catalogue is small, so prices and variants are easy to keep correct in the app.
  • You don't need campaigns or email.
  • You don't discount much, or you're happy to step in yourself whenever someone asks.

A home baker, a tailor or a single-chair salon may never need more.

When a paid assistant earns its cost

A paid assistant is worth evaluating when one of these starts to cost you sales or time.

1. Several staff share the chats. With three salespeople, you need each chat to reach the right person with its history attached, and to know who hasn't replied. Look for assignment, roles and a handoff that carries a summary.

2. Customers also email you. Wholesale enquiries, B2B quotes and export orders often come by email. A tool that handles WhatsApp and email from one record avoids two versions of the same customer.

3. Follow-ups and win-back. Most lost sales are customers who asked a price and went quiet. A paid assistant can follow up after a set time and re-contact past buyers. On the API this needs approved templates, which Meta charges per message (₹0.8631 for marketing and ₹0.115 for utility in India; see our WhatsApp API pricing guide).

4. Campaigns. If you announce new stock, sales or festival offers to hundreds or thousands of customers, you need templates, audience lists and delivery and reply tracking.

5. Exact prices and variants from a large catalogue. A shop with 2,000 items in five sizes and four colours needs the AI to quote the exact price of the exact variant, from current stock. Ask any vendor how it stops the AI quoting a price that isn't in your catalogue.

6. Owner approval for discounts and exceptions. "Can you do ₹500 less?" is a business decision. Look for a tool where the AI asks you, waits for your yes or no, and then tells the customer, instead of deciding itself.

7. An audit of what the AI said. If a customer says "your bot promised free delivery", you want a searchable record of what was said, by the AI or a person, and on what basis.

8. Bookings that respect your hours. For test drives, site visits or consultations, the AI should offer only slots inside your business hours and calendar, and avoid double-booking staff.

The cost you must add

A paid assistant usually runs on the WhatsApp Business Platform, not the free app. Since 1 October 2026, Meta charges for replies there after the first 1,000 per number each month (₹0.115 each in India, before GST), and for every template. Budget for the tool's fee, Meta's message charges and 18% GST.

How to decide: a checklist

Tick each one that's true for your business.

  • More than one person replies to customers.
  • Some customers contact you by email.
  • You lose sales when people go quiet after asking a price.
  • You send offers to more than a few hundred customers.
  • Your catalogue has more items or variants than you can keep current by hand.
  • Customers regularly ask for discounts you need to approve.
  • You need to check later exactly what was promised.
  • You take bookings that depend on staff calendars or business hours.

None or one ticked: start with Meta's Business AI if you're eligible, and read its chats for the first few weeks. Two or three: trial a paid tool against your real questions, prices and discounts before paying. Four or more: a paid assistant is likely to pay for itself. Compare total monthly cost, including Meta's message charges.

Where AdVersAI fits

AdVersAI is one paid option.
